THE UNDERLINE
STUDIO V is transforming a barren asphalt lot beneath two highway ramps into a vibrant new public space for one of NYC’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. The Underline at Dutch Kills, at Dutch Kills and Jackson Avenues in Long Island City, Queens, will turn unused land into a lively area with gardens, seating, an innovative playground, a flexible arts court, picnic spots, and a dog run.
Long Island City, despite its rapid growth, has one of the lowest open space ratios in NYC—just 1.5 acres per 1,000 people. The Underline project, developed with input from community groups, local businesses, cultural centers, and city officials, aims to address this gap.
The Underline will offer a range of activities, including seating, lighting, pedestrian paths, and a playground made from recycled materials. It will also feature a flexible arts courtyard, with a sculptural green topiary, providing a covered outdoor space for local exhibitions.
Given ongoing bridge maintenance, the design uses moveable planters and rock gardens to manage rainwater runoff. The project also proposes enhancements for Dutch Kills Street, such as street trees, boulders to deter illegal parking, outdoor restaurant seating, and a farmers’ market.
As Long Island City grows, The Underline will offer essential active and passive spaces, supporting local restaurants, cultural institutions, and community activities.
