LLADRO
A flagship in the heart of the Ginza district for European classical porcelain sculpture maker Lladró. The store opened in November 2002.
A dramatic, five-story glass curtain wall suspended in front of an undulating silver wall dominates the facade of the Ginza flagship. The design accentuates the verticality of the site, with the store measuring just 12 feet wide and six stories high. The curtain wall reaches to the stone knife-edge store frame and is achieved by a frameless glass system connected by a series of delicate bolts and cables. The result is a seamless sheet of glass with maximum flatness and transparency floating in front of a steel sculptural base. The designers have made the entire facade a sign for the Lladró brand with continuous moving projections across the glass surface.
The interior features a new contemporary look for the company based on a modern interpretation of a Japanese garden. The entire first-floor gallery showcases just a single sculpture. A video presentation of Lladró's collection animates the space. From the courtyard, an elevator takes customers to an enclosed roof garden where sculptures are displayed in a garden courtyard with a retractable roof that opens to the sky. A stairway leads down to galleries on each of the six floors.
