LIGHTHOUSE POINT
Lighthouse Point Park is New Haven’s premier beach and recreation hub, situated at the mouth of New Haven Harbor. It offers summer camps, weddings, barbecues, hiking trails, fishing piers, kayak excursions, and sandy beaches. The park is famed for its historic Five Mile Point Lighthouse (built in 1845) and its vintage 1920s carousel, which still delights visitors today.
At the park’s heart is the aging yellow brick Bathhouse, completed in 1950 by renowned New Haven architects Brown and Von Beren. Originally symmetrical, the eastern wing was removed in 1997, leaving the building with a mismatched facade. Despite this, it remains crucial to park operations, housing changing rooms, restrooms, a recreation space, first aid facilities, kayak and boat storage, and concessions.
The Bathhouse sits beachfront, with a paved walkway separating it from the sand. To the west, a splashpad attracts families on hot days, while an underused paved area lies to the east. The rear provides parking and maintenance space.
This proposed project aimed to redesign and revitalize the historic Bathhouse, enhancing its role as the park’s operational hub, while honoring its history, improving its appearance, and boosting its functionality.
